Some stories are too vast for the ground beneath our feet. They demand liftoff — a countdown, a spark, and the courage to step into the unknown. On “5…4…3…2…1…”, Zachary Mason invites listeners on a three-track journey beyond Earth’s limits, blending imagination with musical experimentation to deliver an EP that is as ambitious as it is inventive. It’s cosmic, eccentric, and unmistakably his own. Released on October 3rd, 2025, this EP marks a defining moment for the Guildford-based artist, his most ambitious project since his debut album Songs. Across its three tracks, Mason constructs a narrative of humanity fleeing a dying Earth and attempting to establish life on Mars. Beneath the sci-fi humor and quirky storytelling lies a reflection on responsibility, loss, and resilience — themes that give the work both depth and emotional resonance.

The title track, “5…4…3…2…1…”, sets the tone with urgency and propulsion. Space rock textures and psychedelic guitar lines create the sensation of launch and acceleration, immersing listeners in a story that is cinematic in scope. Mason’s vision is clear: this is music as storytelling on a galactic scale. “The Funky Martians” a well received one aslo expands the narrative with playful energy and inventive experimentation. Humans encounter hostile Martians, but the conflict unfolds in an extraordinary, humorous twist that highlights Mason’s unique flair for narrative unpredictability. The track’s sonic palette reinforces the quirkiness of the story, balancing intricate instrumentation with melodic accessibility. The EP closes with “Earthsick,” a reflective and emotionally resonant finale. Here, Mason explores the aftermath of interplanetary survival, addressing homesickness and regret with a nuanced sensitivity. While the EP maintains its characteristic humor, this final track foregrounds introspection, demonstrating Mason’s skill in marrying concept with human experience.

The record also features notable collaborations: drums by Nate Barnes (Rose Hill Drive) and bass on the first two tracks by John Thomasson (Little Big Town), while Mason himself debuts his keyboard-driven bass performance on the closing track. All tracks are expertly mixed and mastered by Derrick Lin, ensuring a cohesive and polished sound throughout. Our ongoing collaboration with Zachary Mason across multiple projects continues to be both inspiring and rewarding. This EP stands as a testament to his talent, vision, and unwavering dedication to his craft. Innovative, thoughtful, and audacious, “5…4…3…2…1…” continue to cement Zachary Mason’s position as one of the UK’s most versatile emerging artists. The EP demonstrates his ability to blend genres — space rock, psychedelic, experimental — while telling stories that are both entertaining and meaningful. With imagination, skill, and collaboration at its core, this release is a bold statement of artistry that demands attention.
