The New Citizen Kane imprint, Causing A Commotion unveils an eight-track EP that balances both the personal and body-moving. The creation ultimately brings the artist to a more multi-genre space, using expertly curated production to explore elements of longing, reverie, and impulse. Subconscious sits at the center of the record, grappling with the ambiguity of unvoiced attraction. Two other radio edits—Reason, a personal and thoughtful reflection; and Primordial, a id impulsive—explore oppositional feels, as collectively, they demonstrate Kane's ability to distill his emotional turmoil into tactile synth materials and dance orientated rhythm structures. Outside of this more reflective tone, the collection leans into a mood of exuberance. San Diego (Synthphonica Radio Mix) builds the energy, while Bubble Gum Hot leans playful with a breezy tone.
These songs offer a counterbalance to the more melancholic moments on the EP, providing a mixture throughout its length. Several reimagined titles expand the EP's boundaries even further. The old favorites Ratbag Joy, Hearts Aren't Made of Wood '25, and Meet Me On Street Corners (Synthphonica Radio Mix) make an appearance here with new arrangements, showcasing Kane's ability to revisit old work and dive into so many unique production choices. Each track honors its antecedent composition while also providing something new for returning listeners. Musically, Causing A Commotion layers soft synths, a disco-inspired bassline, and a measured percussion feel fresh and vintage at once. The sequencing suggests a linearity from song to another while maintaining a healthy sense of individualism.
The EP is also a bit of a teaser for Kane's upcoming PSYCHEDELIKA project; it demonstrates an evolution in his creative vision. The mixture of introspective songwriting and club music seems to demonstrate a desire to go off-road, while still incorporating the emotionality that is an essential component of his musical identity. Causing A Commotion will cement The New Citizen Kane as a creator of music that successfully navigates the balance of being contemplative yet accessible. It is meant to be listened to closely, but it is also great in a normal listening setting— a unique glimpse of an artist continuing to refine their sound and build towards the next chapter of their catalog
