The New Year’s Eve Jam 2025 is defined by its spontaneous nature, being a live-to-tape collaboration between J Dulva and Chris Segar at Poolside Studios in Eunice, Louisiana. It was recorded with two microphones, one for each artist’s vocals and one for each artist’s acoustic guitar. The album was created with spontaneity and authenticity being valued more than studio polish. The recordings are not overly produced, which allows for the subtleties of the performers to remain in the recording, including natural timing changes and tonal qualities of the vocal performances.
The album runs from opening to closing, starting with “A Six-Pack to Go” then ending with “New Delhi Freight Train”, with an effortless conversational flow between track to track. Classics such as “Mrs. Robinson” and “Hesitation Blues” have a more grounded feel rather than an overly stylized delivery due to the similarities in J and Chris’ regional heritage, as well as the generational differences between them. The way both musicians interact with each other shows that they have a deep level of musical knowledge built on years of musical experience being shared.
Rather than reinventing the music they played during the jam sessions, the album demonstrates the expressive possibilities of simplicity. The strongest aspects of the music lie within how both of the musicians connect with each other throughout the entire listening experience. Both of the musicians were instinctively responding to each other. The end result is a recording that values sincerity, warmth, and true musical experience over studio polish.
