Some experiences remind us how precious life is, how quickly things can change, and how important it is to value the people and moments we often take for granted. These reflections form the heart of Tara Van’s “MILES ON IT,” a four-track EP released on October 16, 2026. Blending soulful melodies with honest storytelling, the Toronto-based singer-songwriter explores love, loss, grief, resilience, and environmental consciousness, offering a collection rooted in hope and personal growth. Van’s musical identity has developed through a lifelong connection with music and a willingness to express her innermost thoughts. Drawing from soul, folk, pop and jazz, she has increasingly embraced neo-soul, blues and R&B, the styles that feel closest to her artistic instincts. Influenced by artists such as Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, and Thee Sacred Souls, she combines vintage musical warmth with a contemporary approach to songwriting.

The EP opens with the titular song “Miles On It,” a reflective composition about life’s fleeting nature and the importance of appreciating people and experiences while we still have them. “I’m A Vine” builds on this message, exploring personal strengths, resilience, and the value of accepting support from others. Featuring hornist Tom Moffett and bassist Alex St Kitts, the track benefits from additional instrumental character while reinforcing the importance of connection and perseverance. “Moving Picture Show” carries a particularly personal meaning. Written to celebrate the Toronto International Film Festival and its contribution to the city’s arts community, the song also honours Van’s grandfather, a living founder of TIFF. Developed alongside collaborator Dan Dwoskin, the composition connects family history with Toronto’s creative culture, making it one of the EP’s most meaningful moments.

The collection closes with “Take Your Light Down,” a deliberately raw one-take studio recording featuring Van’s vocals and Mark Calderone’s guitar. Captured with a single microphone, the performance preserves the spontaneity of a genuine musical moment. Its unpolished character offers a refreshing reminder of human expression and authentic connection in an increasingly AI-driven musical landscape. Recorded entirely at Apt Sea Sound with producer Mark Calderone, “MILES ON IT” reflects a creative partnership built on friendship, trust, and shared musical enthusiasm. Calderone’s experimental approach allows Van to explore different sounds while maintaining the emotional consistency of the project. “MILES ON IT” is a heartfelt collection that finds strength in vulnerability. Through soulful performances and thoughtful songwriting, Tara Van encourages listeners to appreciate what they have, support one another, and keep reaching for the light, even when life presents difficult obstacles.
